TPO Roofing Installation & Repair in Houston TX
Houston's most energy-efficient flat roofing solution. Cut cooling costs by up to 30% with a professionally installed TPO membrane system from MTE Roofing.
Why TPO Is Houston's Preferred Commercial Roofing Material
TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing has rapidly become the dominant flat roofing material in Houston and across the Southern United States, and for good reason. In a climate where air conditioning represents the largest portion of building operating costs, TPO's exceptional solar reflectivity delivers measurable energy savings from day one. Combined with its competitive cost, proven durability, and environmentally friendly profile, TPO is the smart choice for Houston-area businesses and homeowners with flat roofing needs.
At MTE Roofing, we are certified TPO installers with extensive experience in both commercial and residential flat roofing projects. We serve the entire greater Houston area including Katy, Sugar Land, Houston, Cypress, and The Woodlands.
How TPO Roofing Works
TPO is a single-ply thermoplastic membrane manufactured in rolls typically 6, 8, 10, or 12 feet wide. The membrane consists of three layers: a TPO polymer base, a polyester-reinforced scrim (fabric) center for strength, and a TPO polymer top layer. The sheets are rolled out across the roof and joined using hot-air welding machines that heat the overlapping edges to approximately 900°F, fusing them into a continuous, watertight bond that's actually stronger than the membrane itself.
This heat-welded seam technology is what separates TPO (and PVC) from other flat roofing systems. Unlike EPDM's adhesive or tape-based seams, heat-welded TPO seams don't degrade over time — they maintain their integrity for the life of the membrane.
TPO Membrane Thickness Options
- 45-mil TPO: Entry-level option suitable for temporary buildings or budget-conscious projects. Minimum 15-year lifespan.
- 60-mil TPO: The industry standard and most popular choice. Excellent balance of cost and performance. 20–25 year expected lifespan.
- 80-mil TPO: Premium option for maximum durability and puncture resistance. Best choice for high-traffic roofs or areas with heavy mechanical equipment. 25–30 year expected lifespan.
Energy Efficiency & Cost Savings
TPO's white, highly reflective surface is its defining performance advantage in the Houston climate. Key energy metrics:
- Solar reflectivity: 80–90% of solar energy reflected (vs. 5–15% for dark roofing)
- Thermal emittance: 80–90% of absorbed heat re-radiated
- Rooftop temperature reduction: 50–60°F cooler than dark roofs on summer days
- Cooling cost reduction: 10–30% lower air conditioning bills
- ENERGY STAR rated: Meets EPA Cool Roof requirements
For a 10,000 sq ft commercial building in Houston spending $15,000–$25,000 annually on cooling, switching to TPO from a dark roof can save $2,000–$7,500 per year in electricity costs. Over a 25-year lifespan, that's $50,000–$187,500 in cumulative savings.
TPO vs EPDM: Which Is Better?
TPO Advantages Over EPDM
- ✅ Superior energy efficiency (reflective white)
- ✅ Stronger heat-welded seams
- ✅ Better chemical/oil resistance
- ✅ Available in white, gray, and tan
- ✅ Generally lower installed cost
EPDM Advantages Over TPO
- ✅ Longer performance track record (50+ years)
- ✅ Greater flexibility in cold weather
- ✅ Easier field repairs
- ✅ Better UV resistance long-term
- ✅ Self-sealing puncture characteristics
For most Houston-area applications, we recommend TPO for its energy savings and seam performance. For buildings in areas with extreme temperature swings or where a proven 50-year track record is prioritized, EPDM remains an excellent choice.
Cost of TPO Roofing in Houston
TPO Cost Breakdown (2024–2025)
- 45-mil TPO: $4–$6 per sq ft installed
- 60-mil TPO: $5–$8 per sq ft installed
- 80-mil TPO: $7–$10 per sq ft installed

Our TPO Installation Process
- 1. Roof Assessment: Complete evaluation of existing conditions, structural capacity, and drainage requirements.
- 2. Tear-off or Recover: Remove existing roofing or prepare surface for recover installation.
- 3. Deck Repair: Replace any damaged decking or structural components.
- 4. Insulation Installation: Polyiso or EPS insulation boards installed, often with tapered systems for positive drainage.
- 5. Membrane Deployment: TPO rolls positioned with proper overlap, typically 6" minimum at side laps.
- 6. Heat Welding: All seams, laps, and patches are hot-air welded using automatic welding machines for consistent, reliable bonds.
- 7. Detail Work: Penetrations, curbs, walls, and edge details are flashed with TPO-coated metal and membrane boots.
- 8. Inspection & Warranty: Final quality inspection, seam probe testing, and warranty registration.
TPO Roof Maintenance
TPO roofs require minimal maintenance to achieve their full lifespan:
- Clear drains and scuppers quarterly
- Semi-annual visual membrane inspection
- Annual professional inspection with seam testing
- Promptly repair any punctures or membrane damage
- Keep rooftop HVAC technicians informed about proper walking procedures
- Schedule post-storm inspections after severe weather events
Storm Damage & TPO Roofing
Houston's severe thunderstorms and hurricanes can damage TPO roofing through wind uplift, flying debris punctures, and hail impact. Our storm damage repair team specializes in TPO assessment and repair, and we work with your insurance company through the entire claims process.
